Note: Inscribed and signed in the year of publication to "H.L. Oak, with compliments of the Author, March 28th 1877" in purple ink on the title page [not by Bierce]. Apparently, signed by William Herman Rulofson (noted San Francisco / Bohemian Club photographer), who according to Bierce's letter to Charles Dexter Allen in 1911, financed it only, Bierce and Thomas Harcourt actually co-wrote it, yet here Rulofson would be claiming authorship. BAL binding "B" state; however, no priority. The true first edition without the author's added chapter at rear; contains "Author's Copy" printed at bottom of title page. No copies of this edition not located in ABPC auction records for nearly the past 15 years. BAL 1104.
