Fry traveled to Oregon in 1862 via Fort Connor and Fort Hall, and spent some time as a school teacher in western Washington Territory before returning east via British Columbia and the recently discovered mining regions of northern Idaho and western Montana; Howes points out that his account comprises the "earliest accounts of the Idaho and Montana mines, visited in 1862 to 1864."
