Educated at King's College, London, Brereton went to India in 1857 to work on the construction of the Bombay to Calcutta Railway, arriving just in time to be caught up in the Indian Mutiny. In 1871, following a severe drought in California, Brereton was hired to develop irrigation in the Central Valley of Califorina. He returned to England, then in 1889 moved to Oregon, "the finest climate on earth, a state possessing great natural resources in field, forest and mine, most inviting to settlers and capitalists..."
