Rare distance table for Holladay's famous overland stagecoach line, listing each of the stops on the route, the mileage between stops, and the accrued mileage. Ben Holladay (1819-1887) established a freighting business to Salt Lake City after the Mexican War, gaining the support of Brigham Young. He offered material support to the Pony Express during its brief by legendary existence, and in 1862 gained control of the Central Overland California and Pike's Peak Express Company. He invested in and revitalized the nearly bankrupt stage line, and by 1864 controlled a nearly complete monopoly of the state mail and freighting business between the Missouri River and Salt Lake City. Dan Thrapp, in Encyclopedia of Frontier Biography, calls Holladay "one of the greatest transportation figures America has produced, and his impact on frontier life was immense and enduring."
