Popular edition of Farnham's Travels, with the rare large color fold out map highlighting the gold regions of America affixed to third preliminary page, measuring 63x52½ cm. (24¾x20½"). Title of the map reads "Map of Gold Regions of California. Showing the Routes via Chagres and Panama, Cape Horn, &c." Text below the map is divided in two sections; the left side titled, "Important Directions to Persons Emigrating to California," and the right side titled, "Description of California, or the New Gold Region." Only some copies contain this large folding map according to Cowan. According to Wheat, the existence of the map inside this Farnham title varies. Mr. Charles P. Everitt states that his copy of the title contained a crudely pasted copy of this map and he believes the map was not originally issued with the book, but was printed after the book was published and "carried by canvassers as a means of selling Farnham."
