"This view of the hottest town in the United States shows a party of emigrants crossing the Colorado River on a crude ferry. On the far bank stands the old Spanish prison still to be seen today. Among the goods already landed on the near shore is a cannon, which Mrs. Lilly tells us is one of those salvaged from the Civil War and laboriously transported across the country to California." Peters, California on Stone, p. 52, plate 10.
