Laid in is a letter from the recipients son stating that the volume was signed for his father, an employee of The Macmillan Company and friend of the author. Classic novel of the American Civil War and Reconstruction era in the deep South. First issue with "Published May 1936" on copyright page. In the first issue jacket with rear panel headed "Macmillan Spring Novels" listing GWTW as the second title in the second column. Top front jacket flap corner clipped, but the publisher's printed "$3.00" price still present on the lower flap portion.
