Rare, unrecorded broadsheet or circular, laying out the various characteristics that differentiate genuine Confederate bills from counterfeits. The text begins: "Confederate Treasure Notes will soon be the principal currency in circulation here, and as there are thousands of counterfeit bills afloat, we give the public a few sure tests so as they can guard against imposition..." Differences in the real and fake 20's, 50's and 100's are given, with the descriptions containing hints of both poetry and politics. Describing 20's: "In the genuine, the two hearts between the two X's in the lower right-hand corner, are the sixteenth of an inch apart, and have a spot of white on the broad ends of them. In the counterfeit, they almost touch, and are as black as the heart of the Yankee nation." The text concludes: "The very best thing for all, who hold large amounts of money, will be to send their bills to Montgomery, and have them exchanged for new Treasury notes or certificates of deposit, as provided for in the circular of Mr. Memminger," referring to the Confederate Secretary of the Treasury. Montgomery, Alabama, was the Confederacy's first capital, from January 1861 through May of that year. This would seem to indicate that this broadsheet, not recorded by Parrish & Willingham, would date from that period.
